BOYS PLACE AN IMPRESSIVE SIXTH IN THE
TOUGHEST TOURNAMENT OF THE SEASON
The Warren Hills girls may have stolen the headlines at the Central Jersey Winter Classic, but the boys team had a fantastic day of their own.
To be clear: the Central Jersey Winter Classic is the deepest, most talented field of any bowling tournament in New Jersey. Thirteen of the top 20 teams in the state (Warren Hills boys are ranked #18) were entered, including eight of the top nine. The Streaks put up a very solid 2997, came in sixth place (just missing a top-5 award) and defeated: #5, #6, #9, #13, #14, #17 and #20. Each of the five teams that outscored the Streaks are ranked in the top 8. That's an incredibly impressive performance by the boys, and I'd expect their ranking to improve.
The Streaks were led by Junior Eric Lawson's 233 single and 641, but this was clearly a top-to-bottom team effort. Each of the five bowlers shot at least one 200 game; if you include the girls, all ten Warren Hills bowlers shot at least one 200 game. Senior Darryl Price shook off a tough first game to go 221-222 and post a 605 series. Senior Jake Irwin came through with a big 217 in game 3, which allowed his team to rise from ninth place after two games. Freshman Ryan Monahan posted 200 in game 2, helping the Streaks to a 1018 game, their highest on the day. And Junior Avante Wilson was excellent throughout the event, putting up a 225 single and a 618 series.
Showing no weak links, the Streaks proved they can bowl with some of the state's top teams, and nobody bowled over their heads by any stretch, which means that they have a chance to repeat and improve on this performance in future tournaments, sectionals, and states.
The boys will look to keep it going on Monday, facing another tough field at Laurel Lanes for the Snowball Classic. Expected to attend are a lot of the top teams from the CJWC, several top NJ teams from South Jersey, and a few talented teams from Pennsylvania.
