streaks hold their own at
individual states.
Three Warren Hills bowlers competed in the state individual Tournament of Champions on February 15. Senior Darryl Price, Junior Eric Lawson, and Freshman Kelcie Mannon each earned their way into the state finals by making the cut at sectionals.
Darryl got off to a strong start, shooting 222 in his first game, and followed it up with a solid 204. The scores at the TOC were, to put it mildly, extremely high. The cut for the boys (the top 18 advance to another set of three games) ended up at an insane 686. Darryl faded a bit in game three, but finished with a respectable 599 set, good for 42nd place.
Eric's day started with a frustrating 179, which put him quite a bit behind the contenders. But the junior turned things around in a big way, shooting 254 in game two and giving himself a chance to make the second round. Eric came up with another excellent score, 234 for a 667 series, but the cutline ended up being just a big too high, and Eric finished in 25th place.
The scores at the top of the girls competition were, in context, even more ridiculous than the boys': One bowler would set an all-time state record for a six game series (Kamerin Peters 773-730=1503!), while another (Aimee Sherman) would roll the first girls 300 in state tournament history. Fortunately for Kelcie, the scores around the cutline were a lot more reasonable, and the freshman's 215-189-194=598 was good for 12 place and a spot in the advancers round.
Kelcie got hot at the start of the afternoon set, rolling nine consecutive strikes and finishing with a season-high 275 game, which put her in fifth place overall (the top 5 made the stepladder final). A 209 in game 5 put her in sixth, with a chance to make the finals. But a couple of girls threw incredible scores in the final game (Kelcie would have needed a 275 game to reach fifth place), and Kelcie lost some steam, finishing with a 613 set. At the end of the event, she was in 12th place overall, which was an excellent result for a freshman.
Congrats to all three Streaks for their individual accomplishments!
