STREAKS DOMINATE girls NORTH SECTIONAL TOURNAMENT
It may not have been a thing of beauty, but the numbers don't lie: The Warren Hills girls bowling team are sectional champs (again) with the highest set in the sectional (again), and the highest set of any girls bowling team in the state of New Jersey at sectionals, and are on a collision course with the best Group III teams in the state on Friday with a state title in the balance. Another team effort, another win.
Game one was tough, as most of the girls had trouble finding a shot that would hit on the conditions. Only Senior Jessica Yerance really got it going, finishing with a 202 game, but Junior Katie Winch finished with a flurry of strikes to score 193 and help the streaks to a reasonable 899 game. The only problem was that Teaneck, the girls' top competitors in Group III and bowling on the same set, had an outstanding game of their own: 887. The Streaks' girls were in for a fight.
But a fight brings out the best in these Streaks. Game two saw Katie finish with yet another 10th frame flurry to net 195. Jessica stayed hot with a 191. Senior Jenna Henderson came through with a 201. And Freshman Kelcie Mannon shook off a couple of misses to post a 226 game. When the screens were filled, Warren Hills had totaled 978, and even though Teaneck fired another great game (900), the lead was up to 90 pins and wouldn't get any closer.
Game three wasn't pretty, to be sure, but Senior Elizabeth Hudock broke through with a bunch of strikes and a 211 game, while Kelcie wrapped seven strikes around a 4th frame split to shoot 231. The final game stood at 917, besting Teaneck's 838 and giving the Streaks the sectional title by 169 pins (almost identical to the boys). Teaneck's 2625 (their best effort on the season) proved the be the second-best of any team in the North Sectional, which means the Streaks took the entire field by that margin.
Unfortunately, Kelcie's 644 set (4th high among the 220 or so bowlers) was the only Warren Hills score that qualified for individual states, but that's not the important part. Warren Hills' girls bowling team is headed to the State Tournament of Champions to try to accomplish the one thing that's been the #1 goal of the 2016-17 season: a state title. They've proven they can throw big numbers, they've proven they can beat great teams, and they've proven they can score, and win, when the going gets rough. Now, they get a chance to do it one last time. See you Friday.
