SKYLAND TOURNAMENT is a coronation for
the kings & queens of the conference
When a team dominates the regular season, there's pressure to make it stick with a convincing win at the Conference Tournament. The Streaks rose to the occasion and left no doubts about who's #1 in the Skyland in 2017.
The boys got off to a tremendous start, firing a huge 1108 first game. Junior Eric Lawson (254) and Freshman Ryan Monahan (246) led the way, but Seniors Darryl Price (214) and Jake Irwin (210) and Junior Avante Wilson (184) all contributed to the big number. That first game basically put the event out of reach, but there were more big scores to follow.
The girls got off to a decent start as well, riding Senior Jessica Yerance's season-high 224 and Freshman Kelcie Mannon's 200 to a nice 951. The fireworks were just getting started, as the Streaks girls blew the doors off of game 2: Seniors Jenna Henderson (211) and Elizabeth Hudock (213) were excellent, but the big story was the pair of 250s carded by Junior Katie Winch (259, which would prove to be the highest game of the tournament) and Kelcie (254). Game 2 came in at 1083, just under the Streaks' season-high, and putting them in position to try to reach a season-long goal: a 3000 series.
Meanwhile right on the next set of lanes, the WH boys were cooling off a bit. Well, most of them: Ryan fired a scorching 259 to help the team shoot a solid 978, and put Ryan within range of his first official 700 series (as well as the tournament individual championship).
With the tournament team title assured, game 3 was all about shooting as big a number as possible. Eric's 235 gave him a strong series of 651. Darryl's 199 pushed him over 600 as well (604). And Ryan came through big, making several clutch shots to 1) fire his 3rd 200 of the day, 2) run down North Hunterdon's Francis Vitelli, who had put up a big 690 series, and 3) get that 700. He did it all, finishing a fantastic performance, especially for a freshman. For the team, the final result was a 3073 series, and a tournament championship. They're ready for sectionals.
The girls met their challenge with flying colors, too. Jenna shot 207 to finish off a 601 set. Kelcie (234) and Katie (212) put the final touches on the top two series of both the girls event and their seasons (688 & 656, respectively), which gave the freshman her 2nd tournament individual win of the week. But most impressively, the team posted a 987 game which gave them their biggest 3-game set of the season, and possibly the highest in Warren Hills girls bowling history: 3023. They're ready, too.
Awesome day all around: the scores, the attitude, the energy, the support, the crowd, the trophies, the medals. Warren Hills bowling had it all going on Friday. Great job, Streaks.
Wednesday is a home match against Bridgewater, and also senior day, where our seven graduating bowlers will be honored. Then it gets real: boys sectionals at Jersey Lanes in Linden on Friday at 2:00, and girls sectionals at Bowler City in Hackensack on Saturday at 9:00. In both events, teams and individuals will all be vying for a spot in the state Tournament of Champions.
Full team results and individual leaders.
